Back up your collection

Last updated 10 October 2026

A backup is a copy of your whole collection to keep on your own computer or a memory stick: every tree with its history, your areas and the species you added, and every photograph.

What you get

  • collection.json, everything, in the form DendroLog reads to put a collection back.
  • collection.csv, the same list the website exports, to open in a spreadsheet.
  • photos, every photograph, each named for the tree, what it shows and the day it was taken, for example quercus-robur_t-…_bark_2026-05-03.jpg.
  • README.txt, saying the same in plain words.

A collection with many photographs can run to a gigabyte or two, so it comes as several zip files of up to 500 MB each. Download each one and keep them together. A computer with a good connection is the easiest place to do it.

What it cannot do yet

Putting a backup back into DendroLog is not built yet. The backup is made so that it can be, and until then the photographs and the spreadsheet open on any computer. Work a phone has not sent yet is not in it, so let the phone send first.
